Welcome to a new episode of the Art of Health podcast. Today I will talk about what progress is regarding your fitness-related goals, because you can only make progress by seeing or noticing progress. I'm sure many of you, including myself, have already made much more progress in reality than we've realized. As progress is one of the main drivers for consistent motivation, I want you not only to understand what progress is and what you can expect in fitness goal-related areas but also to build your awareness of your progress. Most of my listeners and followers' goals are a mixture of aesthetic, performance, and health goals. And the two most prioritized goals, according to many surveys, are either losing body fat, gaining muscle, or both. We will talk about different tools to measure your weight loss or muscle gain progress in a practical way.

Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of the Art of Health podcast. I discussed 12 potential reasons for short-term weight fluctuations in one of my the last episodes, which I will link below if you missed it. In today's episode, I want to address seven potential reasons why your weight is stagnating. And by stagnating, I mean why your weight doesn't move anymore at all for at least the last 2-4 weeks. This is how I define a plateau. Everything below that time frame isn't really a plateau because sometimes a caloric deficit and certain behaviors just need to accumulate, or your period might occur, and that's why your weight hasn't been conclusive for the last 1-2 weeks. Everyone who listened to my previous episode and uses my app knows now that your cycle can lead to temporary water retentions, which can hide an actual lower weight. So, as we have defined the term plateau, let's dive into its underlying reasons so that you can move on and keep making the progress you aim for. Because I understand that weight stagnation is frustrating, but there is ALWAYS a reason for it. And in today's episode, we will discover the seven most common reasons I see with clients when they are on their weight loss journey.

Many people associate the number on the scale with losing or gaining fat, but the truth is that daily fluctuations are often caused by various factors other than fat. Not understanding these fluctuations can lead to frustration and demotivation. For example, if you've been working hard to lose weight and the scale doesn't budge, you might be tempted to quit. But what if I told you there's a way to understand these day-to-day weight changes better? Imagine having a scanner that could reveal the substances making up your weight. With that knowledge, you wouldn't give up because you'd understand your body and know whether you're on the right path. And if not, there is always a reason and solution for that. Today, I want to share a checklist with you that can help explain day-to-day weight fluctuations. Let's dive in...

Welcome to The Art of Health Podcast. I'm Marie Steffen, your Health and Fitness Coach, and I am absolutely thrilled to have you here with me. Because it is my mission to help as many people as possible reach their health, aesthetic, and performance goals in the smartest way. With over a decade of coaching experience and working with thousands of individuals, I am here to share my best tips and advice with you through this podcast.
Marie Steffen
I began my fitness journey as a hip hop dancer, I started dancing when I was a kid. I essentially wanted to be in all these dance movies and watched honey all day long, traveled to the US with 16, and connected to foreign street dancers, meeting them for battles to improve my dancing skills.
But my passion for bodybuilding quickly took hold. I was fascinated by the bodies of the dancers and how muscular some of them looked. I wondered if I could achieve such a muscular physique as well and started reading and studying everything about nutrition and weight training. After being a member at the gym for one year, the trainers and people from the gym came to me and asked if I would do that professionally and if I would participate at BB competitions. I answered no, that’s too crazy. I thought that those athletes take drugs and look like men. But when I explored the bodybuilding world a little bit more, I realized there is a bikini division, which seemed not too far away from the physique that I already accomplished. So I took the challenge and prepped myself for a bikini bodybuilding competition and was placed 2nd, which qualified me immediately for the German championships. And that qualified with 18 for the European championship where I won silver medal. I continued participating at competitions for 4 years and achieved more than I dreamed of, second place at the European Championship and third place at the World Championship was huge for me. However, after my bodybuilding career, I felt the need to explore new movements and embrace a broader perspective on fitness and health. I wanted to set new goals in training and nutrition. My health goal was at this point to get my period back, which I lost during my competing times. But I also wanted to change my training style. I searched for a different reason than solely training for aesthetics. This led me to learn skills like handstands and muscle-ups, and ultimately shaped my current training philosophy – a blend of strength, mobility, conditioning, and the joy of learning new skills, that I want you inspire with.
I've been a coach ever since I left school, and my journey has been filled with growth and expansion. I've had the privilege of learning from other exceptional coaches and mentors, constantly refining my approach to help my clients achieve their goals. It was this passion for coaching that ultimately drove me to develop my own app and online courses, first in German and now the app in English as well.
Before I wrap up this first welcome episode, I want to introduce a special format of this podcast – "What Would Marie Do?" Let me know your fitness related burning question, what you’re struggling with and want to get my personal and best advice for. Make sure you give me just a few details about your journey, but keep it as short as possible. I want this podcast to be a platform for interaction and growth, so don't hesitate to reach out and share your thoughts, suggestions, and topic requests.
Thank you for joining me on this exciting new chapter of The Art of Health Podcast. I am grateful to have you as a listener.
